Why does my basement flood more often in April than during winter?

April tends to be one of the toughest months on basements in Michigan, and it comes down to a mix of timing and conditions. During winter, the ground is often frozen, which actually limits how much water can move. Once temperatures rise, that frozen ground begins to thaw at the same time snow is melting and spring rains pick up. The soil quickly becomes saturated, and when it can’t absorb any more water, that excess moisture pushes toward your home’s foundation.

Basements sit below grade, so they naturally become a target for that water pressure. If there are small cracks, aging waterproofing, or drainage issues, April is when those weaknesses tend to show up. It’s less about one big storm and more about consistent saturation over time.
