Urine soaks into porous materials like insulation, wood, subflooring, and drywall, and droppings can break down into fine particles that get stirred up. In attics, contaminated insulation can act like a sponge that holds odor and microbes. In crawlspaces, airflow can carry odors and particles upward into living areas (the “stack effect”). If animals have accessed ductwork or returns, contaminants can circulate through the HVAC system—turning a localized issue into a whole-home air quality problem.
